ASW 28

Flying a thermal glider is, among all, the type of flight that is more relaxing and more like the big birds. But to be minimally effective we have to learn the art.

This ASW28 allows us to do just that, for a very affordable price. This RTF kit includes all the hardware and only miss the battery and our own 4-channel transmitter.

The 1000kV Outrunner, with a 2S 1000 mAh battery is enough for 2 or 3 climbs per flight, just do not expect to climb vertically.

The flight characteristics of this model show a docile behavior but does not forgive everything. The Tip stall is a problem and needs some altitude to regain flight level. Some extra weight in front helps to minimize this problem.

This ASW28 is not too fast, but is maneuverable and it is even moderately aerobatic, if the flying is done with some speed. The ailerons at low speed are slow and require rudder to turn. The elevator is effective at any speed. Rudder is mandatory in order to make coordinated turns.

The space for the receiver and battery is small and has to be a neat fit to include everything and be able to close the cockpit. Done in EPO, this glider is tough, but it is not indestructible. Fortunately replacement parts are available.

The Schleicher ASW 28 is a Standard Class glider with a fifteen metre span built of modern fibre reinforced composites.

The manufacturer of the ASW-28 is Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co. The ASW 28 is a single-seat shoulder-winged composite construction sailplane with a T-shaped horizontal tailplane and 15 metre wingspan. As all Standard Class sailplanes, the ASW-28 does not have flaps or other lift-enhancing devices. It has tall winglets, a retractable undercarriage and a water ballast system.

The structure is a complex composite of carbon, aramid and polyethylene fibre reinforced plastic. This permits a light structure with the strength to carry large amounts of water ballast, thus permitting the widest possible range of wing loadings for weak and strong soaring weather. In wikipedia
